Career Fair Promises to Bring “Hope” to Unemployed:
Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee co-partners with local non-profit group

HOUSTON, TX – Nationally, the unemployment rate continues to edge at 9.9 percent with more than 15 million people left without jobs. Locally, one organization is doing their part to by giving hope to the unemployed who are still searching for work. This year, Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee has joined forces with the Employment Training Institute (ETI), a program sponsored by Hope for Families, Inc. (HFF). HFF is a Houston non-profit organization providing resources and innovative programs for families in the urban community. Together, the congresswoman and ETI announce an initiative to tackle the economic crisis as they host Hope for Jobs – Career Fair and Mixer.

The career fair will be held from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m., on Friday, May 28 at the Center for Hope located at 3015 North MacGregor Way, Houston, TX, 77004.

Hope for Jobs – Career Fair and Mixer is designed to help those job seekers, such as our youth, handicapped and jobless around the Houston metropolitan area, to present their job skills to a number of companies. Candidates will have the opportunity meet with organizations seeking to hire them, and some may even hire on the spot! All interested job applicants should register at our career fair website, to ensure their spot. The unique setting will feature tons of giveaways, and a special “VIP Mixer” will be offered to the first 100 on-line registrants to meet and greet employers, before the fair is opened to the general public at 10 a.m.

Additionally, business organizations are still encouraged to partner with us, as they seek to provide stable employment for viable candidates. Employers may also register at the career fair website, or contact one of the career fair coordinators for more information.

So, take the first step in spreading the word about the Hope for Jobs – Career Fair and Mixer, and help restore Houston’s economy.

Summer Camp 2010 Registration

Hope for Jobs “Career Fair and Mixer”

Hope for Jobs “Career Fair and Mixer” will be on May 28th at Good Hope Missionary Baptist Church’s “Center for Hope” from 9 AM to 3 PM. Registration will begin for the event on Thursday, April 22nd. The first 100 Registrants will receive VIP Access into the event to meet and network with the employers.

We will have a “Get Noticed and Get Results” class on Tuesday, April 27th and Thursday, April 29th from 9AM to 12PM or 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM. Register online for this class. These classes are prepared to enhance your networking abilities and career focus. Open to everyone.

Census Jobs Testing Open to Public

The Census Bureau 2010 has selected the Hope for Families, Inc.’s program, Employment Training Institute, to serve a Census Jobs testing site in Third Ward Houston at Good Hope.

Fighting Obesity in Houston’s Third Ward Community

Heart Disease, High Blood Pressure, Diabetes, High Cholesterol and other ailments are no longer confined to adults. These are also the results of Childhood Obesity. Childhood Obesity is deadly and is projected to destroy thousands of lives in Houston in 2009. The American Obesity Association states, “Obesity in children and adolescents is a serious issue with many health and social consequences that often continue into adulthood. Implementing prevention programs and getting a better understanding of treatment for youngsters is important to controlling the obesity epidemic.”

“…obesity-related complications to translate into life-threatening events, including heart attacks and kidney failure”, said Dr. David Ludwig, director of an obesity clinic at Children’s Hospital Boston, Massachusetts.

Hope for Families, Inc. has stepped into the fight against Childhood Obesity by providing prevention research and educational programs for our Third Ward area children and their families. Our “Hope for Kids – Healthy Living Project” will begin in the Spring of 2009 at James Ryan Middle School. This will be a groundbreaking and important study for the youngsters survival against obesity’s deadly legacy in many families.

Hope for Families’ major fundraiser for the “Hope for Kids” project is the “Annual Holiday Spectacular Benefit” on December 13, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. featuring recording artists Glenn Jones, Terisa Griffin and Curtis Allen at Good Hope Missionary Baptist Church. These wonderful performers have decided to travel to Houston and provide great entertainment in support of the “Hope for Kids” project. Unfortunately, the artist alone cannot support the program without your assistance. Here are some alarming facts about Childhood Obesity:

The need for healthy snack foods that kids love to eat comes at a time of unprecedented concern over children’s health. A recent report by the American Heart Association found that the arterial walls of children and teens who are obese or have high cholesterol are similar to that of an average 45-year-old. USA Today, in a June 2008 article, reported that 32% of all U.S. kids — 23 million children — are overweight.

Studies show…

* 77 percent of African American women are overweight or obese
* African American women are at “high-risk” of stroke, diabetes, coronary heart disease, end-stage renal disease, aches and joint pain due to shifting of the body frame in carrying too much weigh, and psychosocial effects and stigmas
* That African American women cited complications of hair care as the reason they do not exercise or exercise less than they would like.
* Among female youth, the highest overweight and obesity prevalence is found in black (non-Hispanic) girls (ages 6 to 11), 37.6 percent and 22.2 percent respectively, and black (non-Hispanic) adolescent females (ages 12 to 19), 45.5 percent and 26.6 percent respectively.
* Childhood obesity is thought to lead to the development of low self-esteem and other psychosocial problems
* Minority children are at greater risk for obesity suggesting that they might also be at greater risk for developing low self-esteem.

Steps to Help Prevent and Decrease Overweight and Obesity
Home

* Reduce time spent watching television and in other sedentary behaviors
* Build physical activity into regular routines

Schools

* Ensure that the school breakfast and lunch programs meet nutrition standards
* Provide food options that are low in fat, calories, and added sugars
* Provide all children, from prekindergarten through grade 12, with quality daily physical education

Work

* Create more opportunities for physical activity at work sites

Community

* Promote healthier choices including at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day, and reasonable portion sizes
* Encourage the food industry to provide reasonable food and beverage portion sizes
* Encourage food outlets to increase the availability of low-calorie, nutritious food items
* Create opportunities for physical activity in communities

What is Childhood Obesity? The Mayo Clinic states:

Childhood obesity is a serious medical condition that affects children and adolescents. It occurs when a child is well above the normal weight for his or her age and height. Childhood obesity is particularly troubling because the extra pounds often start kids on the path to health problems that were once confined to adults, such as diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.

One of the best strategies to combat excess weight in your child is to improve the diet and exercise levels of your entire family. This helps protect the health of your child now and in the future.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention has these facts:

Data from NHANES surveys (1976–1980 and 2003–2006) show that the prevalence of obesity has increased: for children aged 2–5 years, prevalence increased from 5.0% to 12.4%; for those aged 6–11 years, prevalence increased from 6.5% to 17.0%; and for those aged 12–19 years, prevalence increased from 5.0% to 17.6%.

Why is Hope for Families, Inc. getting involved in the fight against Childhood Obesity?

Houston children are less likely to be active. Television, video games, less focus on physical education and the breakdown of the family structure are likely contributors to childhood obesity. The Obesity Action Coalition has given these alarming facts:

…for the first time ever, we are seeing children develop Type 2 diabetes at an alarming rate, and only 8 percent of elementary schools and less than 7 percent of middle and high schools have daily physical education requirements in the U.S. “These facts should be eye-opening to any parent concerned with their child’s health and wellbeing.
